Name: Alice Jenkins
Parents: Irene & Arthur Jenkins
Mother: Educated lady who advanced through college to become a nurse. Approx 8 years ago suffered from mental illness & was incarcerated for a year. Post incarceration she was treated with deep sleep therapy that unfortunately left her brain damaged and needing care at home.
Father: Works for Remington Rand and has good working relations with James H. Rand Jr. The great depression has hit the company considerably and revenues as of last year (1931) were around a quarter of their per-depression levels.
Alice: Grew up surrounded by medical texts, typewriter manuals and equipment. She comes from once happy family that is now struggling through the decline of her mother’s heath and the continued pressure of the great depression. As a result of her mother’s care Alice did not attend college and instead chose to self study at home with a great passion in journalism and a dream to become one of the best female journalists of her time.
On leaving school she managed to secure a job at the local paper working on the women’s pages due to the speed at which she could type and being easy on the eyes. Alice then used what income she could to help pay for a carer for her mother. However, she soon became frustrated with having to prove herself as being as good as the men around her and being unable to progress away from the woman’s work and onto other assignments.
6 months ago she was fired from her local paper for trying to run an article in the women’s pages entitled ‘Why Shouldn’t We Take Their Jobs?!’ which was soon replaced with an ad for cigarettes. Desperate for work to help support the family she took on a typing job at a local factory.
Friends: John – 19 – local shoeshiner. Alice and John have been friends since childhood and although Alice sees John less frequently she still considers him to be her closest friend.
Faith: Since the decline in her mothers health and the general state of life since the great depression Alice no longer believes in any god. Alice wears her mothers cross however.
Misc: Whilst being attractive Alice is too stubborn to accept the fact and refuses to believe she was ever employed at the local paper for anything other than her typing talent. She dislikes being put down for being a woman & believes if men can do it why can’t she?
She used to believe that her mother would recover from her illness but has recently come to terms with the fact that this is unlikely to happen & often fears for the worst.
Alice has limited spare time, the little she does have she uses to study, improve her typing or tries to catch up with John.
